Chapter 13
Bennett reflexively flinched back.
“Ugh, Ca… Candidate?!”
Still gripping my hand, Bennett looked at me with wide, confused eyes, his shock giving way to total bewilderment.
‘Sorry, Bennett, but…’
I’d anticipated this from the start.
There was no way a low-level purification priest and a trainee holy knight could take on a fanatic hideout and live.
‘I wanted to play it safe in this life, but… guess I’ve got no choice.’
I stepped forward.
Running into a fanatic hideout at low level was practically a death sentence.
But hey, I’d done my fair share of wild, twisted runs. Like hell I didn’t have a trick up my sleeve.
“…!”
“W-what the hell?”
Honestly, I didn’t want to resort to this method.
“This child…!”
The moment I stepped out from behind Bennett, a few of the fanatics gasped as they recognized me.
[Faction: Fanatic of the Evil God]
As their faction mark appeared above their heads, I gave them a bright, serene smile.
“Return the broken god’s left heart! For we follow the evil god!”
The only way a low-level player survives in a fanatic hideout… is by becoming a fanatic.
One fanatic’s eyes went wide.
“W-what did you just—?”
“She speaks our tongue…!”

In a game with high freedom like this one, veteran players eventually try everything.
I was no exception.
While the fanatics stood around confused, I made my move.
“With the Pope candidate rising, how could the Evil God not also choose their champion?”
I placed my hand over my heart—my left side.
Then I bit the tip of my left index finger.
‘Time to become the perfect fanatic.’
I showed them a mark etched on my finger like a ring—one of the hidden gestures used to identify cult members.
“I am a chosen child of the Evil God.”
And at that moment—
A chill ran down my spine. I slowly turned my head to meet Bennett’s eyes.
‘…Whoa.’
He was glaring at me like he wanted me dead.
The softness in his gaze had vanished, replaced by a predator’s focus. His eyes gleamed with such fierce hostility that I almost broke character.
Gotta stay calm.
‘I’m doing this to keep you alive too, you idiot…’
It’s a dangerous bluff. But given the circumstances, there was no other way.
* * *
“The Evil God told me to go this way! The left brain of our god watches over us!”
The once innocent, childish face had transformed completely.
Even her clumsy speech was now sharp and deliberate.
Bennett ground his teeth so hard it was audible.
“Let’s move. We don’t have time to waste.”
When Nemesia had said that, he thought they were going to save the children.
Even if that wasn’t it, he’d assumed she knew the way out. She was a pope candidate, after all. She had to be special.
“Maybe it’s like a barrier. Something only people coming in from outside can see.”
He’d been fooled—by a kid who acted way too sharp for her age.
‘Filthy fanatic…!’
Bennett knew fanatics all too well.
His parents had been killed by one.
And that fanatic had been his cousin—someone he’d grown up with like family.
“Oh, Bennett, come with me to the hell ruled by our Evil God! The Evil God’s brain! The Evil God’s lungs! The Evil God’s heart! Oh Evil God!”
After that, Bennett had joined the Order and faced countless fanatics.
He knew the look in their eyes—the madness, the vacant stare, the mouths hanging open like they were always speaking to someone unseen.
…But this girl, she was something beyond a typical fanatic.
“Dear heavens…”
Even the fanatics nearby looked moved.
Bennett, still unaware of Nemesia’s acting skills, stared in disbelief.
‘I can’t believe I mistook her for a pope candidate!’
She’d been deceiving him from the beginning.
Even the fancy outfit was clearly part of the ruse.
As the fanatics kept their eyes tightly trained on her, Bennett’s mind spun.
‘No, wait—what if she really is the pope candidate…?’
That’d be even worse.
‘A pope candidate chosen by the Evil God?!’
That would be catastrophic.
He had to report this to the cardinal.
If God could send a divine oracle to choose a pope candidate, what was stopping the Evil God from doing the same?
And the way her speech had changed—so sharp, so exact—after revealing herself?
This… this was her true form.
“…Brother, do we believe this?”
“It’s confusing… but she knew our signal. Even though she’s a child.”
“Is that what you’re worried about? She spoke our sacred tongue!”
Unease spread among the fanatics. They were impressed… and suspicious.
If they could infiltrate the Order, why couldn’t the Order send someone here too?
Even if it was just a three-year-old girl.
“You doubt me when I brought back an escaped sacrifice?”
“…How exactly did you manage that?”
Nemesia smiled and pressed her hands together in mock prayer.
“The fool believed me and guided me right here.”
Bennett’s glare could’ve set her on fire. He couldn’t take it anymore.
He lunged, his hand aiming for her throat like a beast.
Smack!
But the fanatic was faster.
“Gah!”
A hand snatched Bennett’s wrist mid-air and twisted it hard.
“Big Brother!”
A new figure stepped out from the crowd of fanatics.
“Deal with this one later,” the man said, eyes landing on me.
“Can you prove yourself?”
He wore a dark armband bearing an inverted pentagram—the mark of a senior cultist.
“Damn it, let me go! You bastard, I said LET GO—mmph!”
Still holding Bennett’s wrist, the man looked back at me.
“If you’ve truly been chosen, then show us the Evil God’s blessing.”
His voice was cold and flat, and I returned his gaze without a hint of fear.
“I’ll prove it.”
I pointed toward the dark corridor.
“Bring me a black slime. I’ll show you the blessing then.”
Bennett, his mouth now gagged, glared at me with eyes full of fire.
He would witness every foul thing I did. He’d survive this and report it all to the cardinal.
* * *
Black Slime.
Among the many aberrations created by the Evil God’s corruption, the black slime was one of the few with a solid form.
No one knew when they first appeared beneath the Order’s grounds. The Order purged them whenever they could, but their absurd rate of reproduction made it impossible to fully eliminate them.
Several slimes—sticky, pitch-black clumps of goo—were brought out and lined up before me.
“If you fail to prove yourself… you’ll become a sacrifice too.”
Even with that warning from the armband-wearing fanatic, I remained calm.
Only Bennett, tightly bound, kept glaring at me with fury in his eyes.
I knelt and offered a prayer, then slowly stepped toward the first black slime.
Black slimes never initiated attack—
Ssssshhhk!
—but anything they touched would melt instantly.
Though not acidic, they inexplicably corroded everything. Divine scholars had studied them endlessly and only managed to conclude they were “concentrations of corruption.”
“Hey, kid, if you touch that—”
“As you can see, it melts everything. A gift from the Evil God to his creations.”
I held up the end of my sleeve, now partially melted, and grinned.
My skin had turned red in places, but I didn’t so much as flinch. The sight unsettled even the fanatics.
I raised one hand slowly.
“Behold. The blessing of the Great Evil God.”
Bennett’s eyes widened.
‘What was that just now? That black lump?’
He thought he’d seen something in her hand, but when he looked again, it was gone.
Maybe it was the lighting—but her hand had looked strangely dark.
And then—
KIIIIIIII!
The moment Nemesia touched the black slime…
…Unbelievably, the black slime began to dissolve.
