I thought as much. The mother-in-law told the Hilia’s parents about the contract marriage. She wants their child to be nothing more than a figurehead while Kiel becomes the true heir.
If I had to guess, the MIL has been giving Hilia miscarriage medication to prevent her from having a child, then, at the end of the contract, if Hilia had violated the terms, then Kiel would then become the rightful heir of the dukedom.
