In the novel, Raphael isn’t as pushy, in fact she hides her intents and what she did for a long while. They strayed a bit too far from the novel to the point it changed the characters.
They do have a discussion regarding the fact that she cannot have a partner or allow herself to be distracted from the path she chose and he does tell her that it doesn’t matter, he will be a step behind her, ready to support her.
Eventually she can no longer deny her feelings and spills the truth about the garden, stating that she has one year left to live. He takes it all and doesn’t sway while it was her last attempt to ditch him, he simply days he will be there until the end and it’s at this moment they make out.
This also leads her wish to change as well. As she said here, she planned to become Empress as she believes it’s what Rezef wants the most and as he took from her hey beloved Nanny, she will take his beloved power. As time passes and Raphael and her become lovers, she wishes to be done with her task, then spend what will be left of her time with him.
The only thing that comes to mind with him behaving against her will is when he tries to stop her from using magic.
