Let’s compare the novel and the comics to make it make sense. Spoiler ahead cut into bits as usual.
Who is Bayel and WTF is going on with the Garden :

As she said he is a powerful Archimage, the one in control of the black garden since eons despite the attempts of others to take it from him

There isn’t much to say about the Garden, even in the novel there is no information about its use, only that is powerful enough for mages to fight over it.

The Garden can be maintained using the lifespan of Humans, making contact for them to get what they wish. Bayel settled in that Temple long ago as its not that used by people due to its specificity and its remote location. It’s a double edge decision explaining the lack of fights between mages for the Garden as nobody knows where is Bayel, but at the same time as Humans forget about magic, the Garden is dying.

Cayena’s abilities, Elixir and roses

The concept of the black Garden is the more you give, the more you get.
In the original novel, she trades half of her lifespan which includes her time already spent, however the spell drains way more than just that, it also drains half of her two pasts lives, which regenerates the Garden entirely and bloom more roses than expected. The issue is that while her lifespans added back to back means a lot, however at this point she is still supposed to have half of her current lifetime left, Bayel is unsure regarding the result which prompts him to survey what will happen next.

In the novel, Bayel doesn’t take away her pain, her instead gives her a drop of Elixit. I believe they chose to change this part for Bayel to seem more Human while he is not, he doesn’t understand much of Humans emotions, he ceased to be one long ago. However he gets pretty curious and eventually comes to really appreciate both Cayena and Raphael, helping them as the story goes on.

Wait, I thought she kept being surprised to still be alive every time she woke up even in the novel ?

There is a slight misunderstanding regarding what causes Cayena’s health to deteriorate after the contract. In novel, she’s still supposed to have half of her life once she gets her power, however Humans don’t have mana, thus she burns her life every time she uses magic and she doesn’t hold on, especially after she understands the nature of her power.

Let’s speak about what she can do : Cayena is able to shape time and space. Among many things she can do with it allows her to stop time, teleport, bring items to herself, augment gravity on a certain point, dress back after long loving nights and so on.

Something about Elixir before going further.

In the manhwa, we can see Bayel taking a part of her pain, in the novel he gives her a drop of Elixir which is something she will eventually create for herself as well since she needs to stay alive until her goal is reached. Elixir gives back health/stamina and can even revive someone who just died or save someone suffering from illness, it can even heal old scars and mend any injury.

So what about Bayel, Raphael and Cayena trio is about.

Bayel likes both Cayena and Raphael which is a surprise to him as they are mere Humans. Because he often uses the shape of a “cheese colored cat”, Cayena and Raphael keep calling him that way, at times forgetting that he’s an Archimage, not an old dumb cat.

How their friendship affects the story.

Bayel eventually gets worried for Cayena who burns what’s left of her lifespan like one would melt a candle with a fire blower. That’s what causes the time of her death to be so uncertain, not the contact itself. I believe the reason why they switched it to a year is to not have to deal with that part of the story which isn’t exactly properly explained in the first place and clashes with the existence of Elixir.
Of course Raphael eventually learns about it as Bayel asks for his help to stop her. However it’s not like it’s easy to do so as she’s so set on her goal.

I was wondering how her past lives could have fed the garden when those’ve already passed. She would have repeated her life if she couldn’t fullfill her predetermined destiny again, huh? It would then mean she wasn’t meant to die in the first place (no duh). Kewl kewl.

Oh but wouldn’t it be a paradox then coz if she fulfills her destiny in this life then she wouldn’t repeat her life anymore so no future lives?? Ugh, idk imma just stop thinking about it
